John Ridley on Minority Presence in Summer Blockbusters
Thursday, August 28th, 2008Screenwriter, novelist and film industry commentator John Ridley, writer of UNDERCOVER BROTHER and THREE KINGS, among others, slams Hollywood's lack of good parts for actors of color in this biting and hilarious essay. It reads like deleted dialogue from TROPIC THUNDER, the best send-up of Hollywood in a looooong time.

There was Jack Black supplying the voice of a Chinese bear in Kung Fu Panda. I guess the producers of the movie thought that it would be alright for an occidental to voice one of the most revered symbols of China, since they gave actual Asian actors Jackie Chan and Lucy Liu all of like five lines in supporting roles.

Hollywood seems so starved for good material that all they're making these days, and for the foreseeable future, is comic movies. This is not a bad thing as long as the movies are good, of course. But I haven't heard a lick about anybody attempting to mount a DOC SAVAGE film. Doc Savage is one of the great pulp heroes of all time, the progenitor of characters like Buckaroo Banzai and so many others. Where's the doc?
